Motivation is fleeting, it comes and goes. But its discipline that stays. It’s discipline that gets you up in the morning and allows you to crush your goals.

Discipline is not an innate trait. It’s a skill you develop.

The people who are disciplined have learned one thing that others haven’t: don’t wait until you “feel like it.”

Follow these 3 ways to develop Real Discipline.

  1. FIRM VALUES

When you don’t know or haven’t clearly defined your values, you end up drifting along in life. Instead of basing your decisions on an internal compass, you make choices based on circumstances and social pressure. You end up trying to fulfill other people’s expectation instead of your own. You can’t develop discipline without clearly defining your values in life.

So these are few steps to defining your values;

  1. Get nice and relaxed.
  2. Have the proper tools (Pen & Paper).
  3. Ask yourself this question: “What is truly important to me as a person?”
  4. Write down whatever comes to you.
  5. If you have more than five values, eliminate some and rearrange them in order of importance.

If you’re having trouble getting started, I have provided a list of values that you might consider.

  • Adventure • Balance • Confidence • Control • Creativity • Discipline • Education • Faith • Family • Financial Security • Friends • Freedom • Fulfillment • Forgiveness • Fun • God • Growth • Happiness • Health • Hope • Honesty • Humor • Independence • Integrity • Knowledge • Marriage • Peace of mind • Power • Service • Spirituality • Success • Truth • Wisdom

Defining your values is the beginning of Discipline.

  1. SET CHALLENGING GOALS

After clearly defining your values which is what will control the decisions you make in life, you have to set challenging goals to enable you grow your discipline.

Discipline is in levels; look at this typical example, Mr Oscar has a clearly defined value of Growth, He wakes up every morning by 5 AM which affects his productivity and growth at work and now he wants to discipline himself to wake up by 4:30 AM, so he sets his alarm to ring by 4:30 AM and he does wake up by that time for one month and now He’s better than who he was last month and its easy for him to maintain that. Rather He chooses to set a more challenging goal to wake up by 4 AM because He will be able to grow more and do more in the day.

So be like Oscar set challenging goals after achieving success on your previous discipline level.

Likewise TheRealMeDM will now be posting two articles per week starting from next week (on Mondays and Wednesdays) because of follower’s demands. So you should do same, set new challenging goals to grow your discipline after succeeding on the previous level. Keep Stretching and always look for ways to develop Real Discipline.

  1. PERSISTENCE

Read this story Titled: Rabbi Akiba: A Drop of Water

A shepherd was tending flocks in the hills of Judah. He became thirsty and went to his favorite brook in the hills to take a drink. As he was drawing the crystal clear water in his palm and putting it to his mouth, something caught his eye. He saw drops of water falling on a huge stone – drip, drop – and directly where the drops were falling there was a deep hole in the stone. The shepherd was fascinated. He gazed at the drops and at the stone.

“What mighty power there is in a drop of water,” thought the shepherd.

Why did the drop of water cause a deep hole in the stone in the story above, the answer is simple, the water persistently hit against the stone and over time the deep hole was formed.

Likewise when you’re fazed with a difficult situation that is testing your discipline don’t give up just Persist.

“some men give up their designs when they have almost reached the goal; while other on the contrary, obtain a victory by exerting at the last moment, more vigorous effort than ever before”. Herodotus

Clearly define your Values, Set Challenging Goals and Be Persistent to develop Real Discipline.
